“The Canada Games Hall of Honour celebrates exceptional Canada Games alumni who have distinguished themselves as athletes, coaches, officials, volunteers or administrators, individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the development and advancement of the Canada Games Movement. Roly McLenahan was a leader in the formation of New Brunswick’s Canada Games team as they ventured into their very first Games held in Québec in 1967. His belief in the Games and their impact went far beyond sport development. In the 1970s and 80s he was an active member of the Canada Games Council, a chef de mission for New Brunswick, and a strong supporter of the Games as a tool for sport excellence, sport development and national unity.”

Roly McLenahan
According to the Canada Games Council, “Morell’s involvement in the Canada Games is certainly to be commended as his commitment to the Movement spanned over 26 years. He was a member of the Canada Games Council from 1984 to 1987 and prior to that was a mission member, assistant-chef or chef de mission for Team New Brunswick from 1969-1981 and altogether has been to 14 Canada Games. The Fredericton, New Brunswick native played a major role in the development and establishment of the Canada Games’ Jack Pelech Award and the Roly McLenahan Torch and was a member of the Host Community Board of Directors for the 1985 Canada Games in Saint John, New Brunswick. He has been involved in the sports community in New Brunswick and nationally since 1968.”

“Presented by the Interprovincial Sport and Recreation Council, the Jack Pelech Award goes to the provincial or territorial team whose athletes, coaches, managers, and mission staff best combine competitive performance, good sportsmanship and a spirit of fair play, cooperation, and friendship. The award is named after Jack Pelech, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Canada Games Council from 1971 to 2001.”

“Claude Hardy, who passed away on December 5, 1999, was a pioneer of the Canada Games from their very beginning. An award in his name serves to recognize the talents and dedication of a provincial or territorial Mission Team. The first Claude Hardy Award was presented at the 2001 Canada Summer Games in London, Ontario.”

CENTENNIAL CUP
Awards
According to the Canada Games Council, “the Centennial Cup exemplifies the pan-Canadian sport development objective of the Canada Games. It is presented to the provincial or territorial team that shows the greatest improvement from one Summer Games to the next or from one Winter Games to the next. The Centennial Cup has been won by ten different provinces and territories since added to the Games in 1971.”

THE ROLY MCLENAHAN CANADA GAMES AWARD

The Roly McLenahan Canada Games Award was introduced in 1985 to honour the memory of Roly McLenahan and to recognize a Canada Games athlete from New Brunswick who best combines excellence in sport, perseverance and sportsmanship, and who has made a significant contribution to the New Brunswick team effort in the Canada Games.

"The Saint John Summer Games introduced the name change from the Canada Games Torch to the Roly McLenahan Canada Games torch in honour of New Brunswick's Roly McLenahan one of the original founders of the Canada Games. The Roly McLenahan Canada Games Torch is used to commence each Canada Games Torch Relay and must be used to ignite the official Games Flame during the Opening Ceremonies."

“The Canada Games Flag was previously awarded at the Canada Games to the Province or Territory with the greatest number of points from all. Flag points were awarded to every athlete in every sport based on performance and participation and then aggregated for a provincial or territorial total. Flag Points are now only calculated as an internal mechanism.”
